The Ribble Valley 10k incorporating the North of England 10k Championships was won today by an impressive Jonny Mellor. Winning in 29.12 Mellor jumped to the top of the UK Rankings for 2013 ahead of double World & Olympic Champion Mo Farah. Mellor lined up again an impressive 10k field with GB athletes Nick McCormick and the formidable Hawkins brothers Callum & Derek. IMG_4798

The race was taken out by Tom Cornthwaite & pushed by Neil Renault, Joe Bailey & Daniel Studley going through 5k in around 15.12. Mellor who holds the course record then put a fantastic kick in to stretch the field out with Tesfaye Debele & Callum Hawkins keeping pace. At around 6k Mellor had stretched his lead by around 50m and continued to push on.

IMG_4824Mellor then ran the last 5k in 14 minutes as he unleashed on the Ribble Valley course. Mellor who also won the North of England title was followed in by Callum Hawkins who ran solo for long period of the last 5k with Danile Studley & Rowan Axe chasing him down. IMG_4833

In the Womens race we saw the return of European Indoor Champion & course record holder Helen Clitheroe in her first race back for a long while. However it was the young talented triathlete Georgia Taylor-Brown from Sale Harriers who took the victory & the North of England title in a PB of 33.34. This was Georgia’s first 10k race and ran one of the fastest times ever for a GB Junior athlete & she beat some very good athletes in the process. With Nicola Duncan (33.47) & Kendal AAC’s Rebecca Robinson (34.02) not far behind. Helen ran 34.09 just behind Vicky Holland in 34.08.

The awards were presented by Dr Ron Hill who was celebrating his 75th birthday. The race was organised by Blackburn Harriers & AC who then help local athletes perform at the highest level though the proceeds raised. A brilliant community event and with 5 athletes running 29 minutes has a very serious front end that just keep improving year on year.
